2021 – “Another Day in Perrydise”

We managed to make it through the end of 2020 safe and sound. We closed out 2020 with an end of year brief shake-down of our latest motorhome in the mountains of northern Georgia, and Tennessee. The next act would be the post shake-down repair and trip preparedness mode for 2021. We had many items to prepare and repair prior to trekking to our planned “Another Day in Perrydise” outing at the Georgia National Fairgrounds in Perry, Georgia scheduled in March 2021.

Our parking location at the Rally

The five-day outing to Perry was centered around the Family Motor Coach Association’s (FMCA) 102nd International Convention and RV Expo. We have been members of the FMCA since the summer of 2007 when we purchased our first large motorhome, and have attended several FMCA family reunions as well as regional conventions. The conventions are large in the number of attendees and motorhomes, as well as a large geographical area to accommodate all of the big rigs. I believe this convention in Perry numbered more than 1,300 motorhomes. The largest Anna and I attended was early in our RVing adventures, in St. Paul, Minnesota, where more than 5,000 motorhomes filled the state fairground as well as the city streets. While the Perry convention (rally) was fun, the rally in St. Paul was both impressive and memorable.

Anna’s sister, Hazel, and Hazel’s husband Wes, who are new motorhome owners also made the trip with us (in their motorhome). As we approached the national fairgrounds and Wes first noticed the sea of motorhomes, he said, “Oh my gosh, this looks like NASCAR for old people.” There is probably some truth in that statement! This was the first time we attended a large rally as members of a chapter – the Peach State Allegro Club. Our club selected a staging area adjacent to the motorhome entrance prior to entering the grounds so our entire club would be ready and able to enter at the same time and park along side of each other. We ended up parking next to a large open area which was a convenient area for our club members to gather each night. Barry Lindquist provided the campfire and cooked a few goodies each evening.

Josh Turner performing

In addition to the evening campfire gatherings, the FMCA provided nightly entertainment, The concerned for social distancing and Covid tracing throughout the entire event was handled great, and really very little inconvenience for anyone. Comedian Jeff Allen, the Malt Shoppe Memories group, and country singer Josh Turner were the head liners for the evening entertainment. Wes and I attended several seminars pertaining to maintenance and caravan travel, while our wives were busy with other events (I feel safe just leaving it at that.)

Needless to say, we all departed the rally with a great deal more knowledge than we had upon arrival. Wes and I have made several adjustments to our coaches and completed several repairs with the help of our friend, Richard White. Richard is a mechanical, electrical, and computer genius who just happens to have a humongous shop and loves working on motorhomes. He is a blessing. If you are an RVer and ever need help while in the Carolinas, contact me and I will connect you with him, or you can email him at richard@mozzafiatomotorcoach.com.

We have almost completed our planning for out next outing scheduled in the coming months. It should be a great adventure, especially for Hazel and Wes who have never been to a national park. Wes opted out of buying a nice GPS for his motorhome, stating that all he had to do was keep the back of my motorhome in his windshield and he wouldn’t get lost! Ha!
